I Overcame Satan’s Temptation by Relying on God’s Strength (Part 1)

I’m a Christian. If you were to ask me if I’ve encountered any difficulties throughout my journey of faith, I would say that hindrance from family has been the single greatest difficulty that I’ve experienced. This is an issue that many other new believers may be confronted with. Although I experienced weakness and pain in the face of my family’s disruption and suppression, I was able to gain some understanding and discernment of Satan’s evil essence and motives through the enlightenment and guidance of God’s words. I also really deeply experienced that no matter how Satan may hinder or disrupt me, God is always by my side, guiding me and leading me with His words. This allows me to overcome Satan at every turn and live before God.

The First Feud

In March 2015, I very fortunately accepted Almighty God’s gospel of the last days. I gradually came to understand some truths by gathering with other brothers and sisters and reading God’s words; I knew that God has expressed words to do the work of judgment in the last days in order to transform, to cleanse our internal satanic dispositions so that we may fully escape the binds and strictures of sin, thus attaining purification and full salvation from God. In gatherings when I heard brothers’ and sisters’ experiences and understandings of God’s words I particularly saw how, as corrupt human beings, the only way for us to cast off our corrupt dispositions and live out a true human likeness is to accept the judgment, chastisement, pruning, dealing with, trials, and refinement of God’s words and to truly reflect on and know ourselves. In every gathering when we read God’s words I felt such great enjoyment and I determined to really pursue the truth and rid myself of corruption as soon as possible. However, just as I was basking in the watering and sustenance of God’s words and was tasting His love, a temptation from Satan came upon me.

Recently, my mother’s health has not been good. It is not very convenient for her to leave the house. Our church leader was afraid that this would interfere with her attending meetings. In June, 2016, during my spare time off duty, I started to search on the internet for all sorts of games with my tablet computer. One day at noon, I found a role-playing game. In the afternoon, without scruple, I spent two hours of time on the game until I had a good command of all the operations associated with its different functions. Unconsciously, I was secretly delighted: I have finally found a good game to play! In this way, during a time when I let my guard down, temptation quietly befell me.

Deep in the night when all was quiet, Ma Ling stood in silence by the window thinking about a conversation she had had with a church leader that day.

The leader, Sister Bai, said: “Sister Ma, one of the people taken in the most recent wave of arrests of brothers and sisters by the CCP government was a sister who used to stay at your home. We’re afraid that the police will track her movements through video surveillance recordings, and in that case you would certainly be implicated. The duty that you’re currently performing would be impacted too. I don’t know if you have any particular plans.”

Ma Ling pondered this for a moment, then responded resolutely, “I’ll sell my home! The CCP government has always tried to follow every clue to arrest more Christians. If I don’t move, the CCP police could burst in at any moment.”

Ma Ling well knew that believing in God and performing her duty in China, a country with an atheist party in power, meant being subject to the CCP police’s persecution and arrest and even the danger of losing her life; and that Christians’ homes had not been their own for a long time, and wherever they went, they couldn’t stay long—her home would have to be sold sooner or later. She knew that selling it was her best course of action at the time, but she still owed tens of thousands of yuan on her mortgage. After the divorce from her husband she could not get her residence booklet from him, so she hadn’t been able to get the deed for the property. Without the property deed, there was no way to sell the apartment. The memory from several months prior of being sent off by an employee because the documents for her property deed weren’t complete surfaced in Ma Ling’s mind and she couldn’t help but let out a sigh. She was feeling a bit anxious. The more she thought about it, the more difficult she felt it was and the more unsettled she felt. All she could do was pray to God: “Oh God! Some brothers and sisters from the church have been arrested and my home is in danger. I want to buy a different place to continue performing my duty but I can’t get the property deed, so I have no way to sell this apartment. O God! Faced with this difficulty, I don’t know what to do next. Oh God, may You guide me, and if Your will is that I sell this apartment, may You open up a path….”

What is doing one’s duty?

Fulfilling your duty is the truth. Fulfilling your duty in God’s house is not simply fulfilling some obligations or doing something you should do. It is fulfilling the duty of a created being living between heaven and earth! It is fulfilling your obligations and responsibilities before the Lord of creation. Fulfilling the duty of a created being is the truth; it is your bounden duty.

Your duty is not managed by you; it’s not your own enterprise or your own work. It’s God’s work that requires your cooperation, thus giving rise to your duty. No matter what kind of duty you are performing, it is not your own enterprise or your personal business. It is the work of the house of God, it forms one part of God’s management plan, and it is the commission God has given to you. So then how should you treat your duty? …

In performing your duty you must first seek out God’s requirements. Performing your duty is not selecting your personal preferences or doing whatever you would like to do, and it is not doing whatever you are happy and comfortable doing, or whatever will make you look good. If you forcefully impose your preferences on God or practice your own preferences as if they were the truth, observing them as if they were the principles of the truth, then isn’t that wrong? That is not fulfilling your duty and performing your duty in this way will not be remembered by God.
